PARABLE OF THE SOWER THURSDAYS | 7PM | ON ZOOM Join Pastor Lisa K. Harmon and Youth & Young Adult Director, Marcus Frye for a discussion on Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. This incredible book, for mature audiences, is a seminal work of dystopian science fiction published in 1993. Through diary entries written between 2024 and 2027, the novel tells the story of a visionary teenage girl who flees her Los Angeles-area enclave with a group of followers amid social and environmental collapse. We’ll be reading the text, drawing parallels to the biblical story of the sower, as a lens through which to think about cycles of history, to analyze our present world, and to dream up new futures. This book can be triggering. **Trigger Warning** Note from Marcus about the book: Parable of the Sower is a truly poignant and prophetic book. That being said, it can also be a difficult book to read at times. The book is set in the near future, during a time of intense social, economic, and political instability. The narrative contains references to, and brief descriptions of, horrific violence, sexual assault, and drug abuse. The content may be disturbing and/or triggering for some. However, the overall message and narrative of the book is one that showcases the indomitable hope, resilience, and creativity of the human spirit. In spite of a situation that seems hopeless, the characters of the story are able to form community, create safety and belonging, and persevere in spite of the ever-present danger and uncertainty they face.
